Dr. Harald Kuntschner

I am a Project Scientist in the Directorate for Science and Full Astronomer in the science faculty of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

On the duty side I work as the project scientist for MAVIS (MCAO Assisted Visible Imager and Spectrograph) which is approaching FDR in June 2025. (MAVIS).

I also worked as the project scientist for ERIS, the Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS). This 1-5 µm instrument with near-diffraction limited capabilities is located at the Cassegrain focus of UT4, the telescope that is equipped with the AOF. Available from P111.

In terms of research I'm working mostly on the stellar populations and dynamics of early-type galaxies in the nearby universe. I'm a full member of the SAURON and ATLAS3D collaborations which characterized the dynamics and stellar populations of nearby early-type galaxies and bulges with surveys using the integral field unit SAURON on the WHT (4.2m, La Palma, Canary Islands).

In general I'm interested in galaxy formation and evolution.
