Working Group Recommendations | ![]() |
Summary
- The WG recommends that EIS preliminary results be reviewed in mid-October by the EIS WG and presented to the OPC at its next meeting in November 1997. Based on these results the WG may suggest -- if necessary -- further adjustments in the implementation of the survey, within the allocated time.
- The WG fully endorses the new design of EIS-DEEP, and requests the EIS Team to propose the field selection for DEEP I.
- The WG recommends that the OPC approves the survey in its entirety now, with the understanding that the observing time beyond Period 60 will be the subject of periodic reviews by the WG to be reported to the OPC at least one month prior to the OPC meetings.
- Owing to the quasi-automatic observing plan for the EIS, as well as the scheduling (half-nights etc.), the WG recommends these observations to be carried out in Service Mode as much as possible.
- The WG recommends that the possibility of a collaboration between CFHT and ESO should be explored in order to acquire the images for the EIS WIDE field in the northern galactic cap. The same applies to the possible collaboration with AAT for the spectroscopic pruning of the sample of QSO candidates.
- The WG reaffirms that the work being carried out within the EIS project will be extremely valuable in the long run for the ESO community, not only by providing targets to VLT first year, but also by laying down the groundwork for future imaging surveys with the wide-field imager at the 2.2m telescope. It is also an important pilot program for the development of the Archive Research Facility envisioned for the VLT data archive, and for the Science Verification of SOFI and SUSI2.
- The WG recommends that the EIS home page should be updated following the final approval of the OPC. This should be accompanied by a brief summary in The Messenger.
