The dollar sign ($) truncates
search terms. It should be used in order to find singulars and plurals or
as a wildcard if you are not sure of the spelling of a search terms.
We recommend to use the default
search mode (SEARCH EVERYTHING) by pressing return after typing your query.
SEARCH EVERYTHING will lookup your search terms anywhere in the title entry.
You can also target specific fields within records (author, title, etc.) Search
terms can be combined using the Boolean operators AND, OR or NOT as well as
brackets.
Type
telnet libhost.hq.eso.org. Login: library,
password library.
Specify the terminal type you are using (e.g. ``xterm'' if you
are using an X terminal). Press RETURN twice.
Press RETURN twice to BEGIN and to enter the
STANDARD SEARCHING area which will search the entire catalog
record for any word(s) you key in here.
Enter search terms. Combine search terms by AND or OR. It
is recommended to end a search term with the dollar-sign
(``$'') which truncates words. This will help to retrieve also the
plurals of search terms. Press RETURN. Hits will be
presented in a list of brief records.
Type F (FORWARD) (without pressing RETURN!) to page down
through the list of brief records.
To see more details of an entry, move the cursor on that record
(using the arrow keys), type V (VIEW) and press
RETURN.
Type F (FORWARD) (without RETURN) to see the second page
of the record.
The location (e.g. the name of the current BORROWER or
SHELVES) is shown at the end of each record!
