DIMM seeing statistics at Paranal since UT1 first light: monthly average (red), median (black) and 5th percentile (blue). The dashed lines give the respective long term (89-95) site characteristics (median=0.66", 5 percentile=0.38"). Seeing is reconstructed from DIMM measurements taken at 6m above ground, and corrected to 0.5mu and zenith. The DIMM (Differential Image Motion Monitor) assumes an isotropic and well developped turbulence with an infinite outer scale. VLT science images have shown that seeing at a large 8m class telescope limited by the atmosphere is better than simultaneous DIMM estimates.
