Flight above the VLT Paranal Observatory

We continue the publication of video clips from the Paranal Observatory by showing aerial scenes of the VLT site and an overall view of Unit Telescope 1 in its enclosure. The footage was obtained by the ESO EPR Video Team during a recent mission.

Aerial view of the Paranal Observatory. At the mountain top are seen the large enclosures for the four VLT Unit Telescopes, the (partly subterranean) building of the Interferometric Building (at centre), as well as the foundations for the smaller, moveable telescopes of the VLT Interferometric Array. The VLT Control Building is situated just below the UT1 enclosure (upper right corner of the icon picture). (Video sequences obtained on December 16, 1997).

These sequences may be reproduced, if credit is given to the European Southern Observatory. More extensive extracts from the available video coverage, suitable for transmission and in full professional quality (Betacam, etc.), may be obtained by TV companies upon request; please contact the ESO EPR Department for more details.

The EPR video clips -service to visitors to the ESO website was initiated in December 1997 and allows `animated' illustration of the ongoing work at the European Southern Observatory. The most recent clip was: ESO PR Video Clips 01a-c/97 : Transport of VLT 8.2-m Zerodur mirror from Antofasta to Paranal (22 December 1997).

Information about other ESO videos will be found in the corresponding webarea.
