EU ARC CASA tutorial for Cycle 1 projects

The workshop is aimed at members of the European ALMA community who are involved in accepted Cycle 1 projects.

It will be an intensive two day tutorial with several hands-on sessions in which you will learn how to perform general ALMA data calibration and imaging with the data reduction package CASA.

Please note that for detailed help with the analysis of your own ALMA data, you have the opportunity to visit your ARC node for face-to-face support. During the tutorial in February, we will not have the opportunity to provide extensive data reduction support for individual projects.

You will need a reasonably powerful laptop (Linux or Mac OSX 10.6 or 10.7) with at least 80 GB empty disk space.

Location

This tutorial will take place at ESO, Garching (travel information) in the Council Room (in the main building, please ask at the reception in the main building)

Program

The tutorial will begin at 9:00 on Thursday and will end at 17:00 on Friday

The hands-on sessions will offer several alternatives for different skill levels and interests.

Hands-on sessions

If you want to participate in the hands-on sessions:

• You will need to bring a reasonably powerful laptop (>= 1.7 GHz Dual-Core, >= 2 GB RAM)
• The laptop should have a Linux (e.g. RHEL 5.7 or compatible versions, ideally 64bit) or Mac OS 10.6 or 10.7 installed
• You should install CASA 4.0.1 on the laptop (see the CASA homepage for instructions)
• Please download the following data packages and other files from home before you come to the tutorial (at the meeting there will be very limited internet access bandwidth!)
  • The CASA cookbook for your reference during the hands-on sessions casa_cookbook.pdf (8 MB)
  • The M100 data sets for the beginners' hands-on sessions m100-tutorial-msdata.tgz (18 GB)
  • The M100 sample imaging cube mask file M100line300x300.mask.tgz (60 kB)
  • The IRAS16293 dataset (with fixed phase cal position) for the SelfCal hands-on session IRAS16293_Band9_CalibratedMS_FIXED.tgz (2.8 GB)
  • The Analysis Utilities needed for the Band 9 Calibration and M100 imaging hands-on session analysis_scripts.tar (1.4 MB)
  • The dataset needed for the Band 9 Calibration hands-on session band9_calibration_hands-on.ms.tgz (7 GB)
• The internal disk of your laptop (external disks are too slow) should have at least 70 GB of empty disk space after the download of the data packages
