             VLT-SW-MAR2001 - RELEASE NOTES FOR FCD (FIERASW)
             ================================================



Minor bug fixing release.
The major change is the porting of the FIERA SPARC to pecs.
This has to be kept in mind when upgrading a system (the upgrade of the
VLTROOT is not enough): READ CAREFULLY THE "NOTES FOR THE FIERA UPGRADES
IN PARANAL" below



   Changes (with respect to NOV2000):

       - minor bugs fixed
       - Fiera SPARC Templates ported to pecs

   New Features (with respect to NOV2000):
      
       - new public database points in fcdDbPublic.h



All changes and enhancements are documented in the new version of the
Fiera Software User Manual (VLT-MAN-ESO-13640-1388 Issue 1.3)

A new version of the Fiera Maintenance Manual has been delivered
(VLT-MAN-ESO-13640-1707 Issue 1.1) with the information needed to
maintain the FIERA systems in Paranal.

The two Manuals are available via anonymous ftp.




NOTES FOR THE FIERA UPGRADES IN PARANAL:
---------------------------------------

As far as we know, this is the situation of the FIERA systems
in Paranal, at the moment:

UVES BLU   FEB2000
UVES RED   FEB2000
FORS1      FEB2000
FORS2      FEB2000
VLTTC1     NOV2000
VLTTC2     NOV2000

These systems should be upgraded as follows:

1) UVES BLU and RED, FORS1, FORS2: complete upgrade
   (i.e., Operating system and VLTSW).
   Action:
   - follow chapter 2.1 of the Fiera Maintenance Manual.

2) VLTTC1 and VLTTC2: upgrade of the VLTROOT only
   (i.e., no Operating system upgrade).
   Action:
   - install pecs.
   - port "fcdrun" and "Instrument User" to pecs.
   - follow chapter 2.3 of the Fiera Maintenance Manual.


NOTE: Since the DSP adapter boards are the same on all the different
      systems (FORS1 and VLTTC1 should have been already upgraded),
      no problems are foreseen with drivers.
