              VLT COMMON SOFTWARE "OCT99" - OVERVIEW
              ======================================

OCT99 release is intended to be a major release, introducing
a relevant set of new features and a major upgrade of the underlying
tools and packages.

OCT99 has been tested for the Y2000 and contains the relevant
patches for both Operating System and tools.

The Y2k, the new GNU compiler, the new Tcl/Tk have introduced
backward incompatibility that could not be hidden at VLTSW level, but
may require changes in the application code level. A set of
portability guidelines are provided.

OCT99 is installed in PARANAL on UT2/3/4 while UT1 will continue 
to operate using FEB99.

OCT99 is distributed as upgrade kit to all sites that 
received OCT98/FEB99 and as complete kit to new entitled sites.
