Abstract

Delta Velorum is a nearby multiple stellar system. The most luminous component was found in 2000 to be the brightest and nearest known eclipsing binary. An eclipsing binary offers an exceptional opportunity to determine precisely a set of fundamental parameters (mass, luminosity, size and chemical composition) for two stars of same age. With this special potential for stellar studies, Delta Velorum could become a valuable template for its class of objects, an opportunity that has not yet been exploited. These data have been acquired during a Science Demonstration run of AMBER in the night of Februaury 25, 2005. Light collected from three telescopes (UTs 2,3,4) was recombined in medium resolution mode (R=1500). The observations consist of 9 exposure files of Delta Velorum (HD79456) and 6 exposure files of its calibrator HD63744. Each file contains 500 frames taken with 59ms exposure time.
The scientific interest of these observations is to resolve the two components of the eclipsing binry. We have analyzed the data with the version 0.106 of amdlib (12 January 2005) accessible on: http://amber.obs.ujf-grenoble.fr/article.php3?id_article=81
