Video News Release 7: Impressions from the ESO Solar Eclipse Expedition in 1994

ESO Video News Reel no. 7 ("Impressions from the ESO Solar Eclipse Expedition in 1994") is published on July 23, 1999. It is issued in anticipation of the upcoming solar eclipse on August 11, 1999, and provides a brief "preview" of what may happen at that time. Some of the scenes from this News Reel are included in ESO Press Video eso9935. VNR No. 7 begins with some views of the stark landscape at Salar de Surire on the altiplano (4200 m altitude) in the Chilean Andes mountains, near the Peruvian border. The ESO expedition cars move up the dirt track, past some llamas. View of the observing site. The telescopes are assembled and aligned. Statement by a participating ESO astronomer. Reactions from the participants before and during the phase of totality. Views of the eclipsed Sun and the "diamond ring" effect. Concluding statement by ESO astronomer. A series of stills from the partial phase. The transition from the partial to the total phase with the "necklace effect". Stills from the second partial phase.

This Video News Release is targeted especially at broadcasters for further editing. In order to keep the audio tracks editable, different sound information has been recorded on two separate tracks at optimal volumes as is common standard in professional post production. This video is not meant for on screen viewing — on ESOcasts are better suited for that.
