Dnes, 13. března 2013, se v odlehlé části Chilských And uskutečnila oficiální inaugurační ceremonie nového dalekohledu ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array). Tato událost je oslavou dokončení všech hlavních systémů tohoto obřího přístroje a formálního přechodu od konstrukční fáze k plně operativní observatoři. Projekt ALMA je realizován v partnerství Evropy, severní Ameriky a východní Asie ve spoluprácí s Chilskou republikou.
