ALMA's Technical Building
This is the Technical Building for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) — a state-of-the-art telescope that is used to study light from some of the coldest objects in the Universe. This building houses the ALMA Correlator, which at an altitude of 5000 metres, is the highest and one of the fastest special purpose computers ever built. The Correlator’s computing power of 17 quadrillion operations/second is equivalent to millions of laptops or smartphones.
