A European ALMA antenna takes a ride on a transporter

A European antenna for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is being moved by the transporter Lore from the assembly facility to the new outdoor foundations at the 2900-metre altitude Operations Support Facility (OSF) in the Chilean Andes. The ALMA transporters are two unique vehicles, specifically designed to carry antennas which weigh more than 100 tonnes each, at altitudes up to the 5000 metres of the ALMA Array Operations Site (AOS). ALMA, an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile.
