ALMA antenna foundations

View of the antenna foundations at the ALMA Array Operations Site (AOS), currently under construction on the Chajnantor plateau, at 5000 metres altitude in the Chilean Andes, some 50 km east of San Pedro de Atacama. The 66 movable antennas of the main ALMA array can be spread across the plateau over distances from 150 m to 16 km, which will give ALMA a powerful variable zoom. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is the largest astronomical project in existence and the largest radio telescope in the world.
