In the distance of this panoramic image the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) can be seen. APEX is a 12-metre diameter antenna located at an altitude of 5100 metres, on the Chajnantor plateau in Chile’s Atacama region. The antenna observes the Universe at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths.
