Two-dimensional spectra of Abell 1835 IR1936

Reproduction from two-dimensional spectra around the emission line at 1.33745 μm showing the detected emission line of Abell 1835 IR1916 (circle above). If identified as Ly-alpha (0.1216 μm), this leads to a redshift z=10. The line has been observed in two independent spectra corresponding to two different settings of the spectrograph: the right panels show the spectra in the short wavelength setting (centred on 1.315 μm), the long wavelength setting (centred on 1.365 μm), and in the composite, respectively. The line is seen in the dark circles. Note: Since these results have been published several further investigations by several independent teams have been undertaken. A deep observation with the Gemini-North Near-Infrared Imager (NIRI) has not detected the source to fainter magnitude limits than in the ISAAC data. Also, a deep V-band image taken with FORS does not show the object to be present. The status of this object is hence currently unresolved.
