NTT images of the supernova 1995K

This composite photograph shows a sequence of images of the very distant Supernova 1995K obtained with the EMMI and SUSI instruments at the 3.5-metre ESO New Technology Telescope.
The image shows the supernova near maximum light at red magnitude approx. 22.7 on April 3, 1995, just after its discovery. Three weeks later SN 1995K had faded considerably and it was no longer visible two months after discovery

Technical information: The top image is a 5 min exposure with the EMMI instrument during 0.8 arcsec seeing; middle image: 10 min exposure with SUSI during 0.5 arcsec seeing; bottom image: 20 min exposure with SUSI at 0.7 arcsec seeing. All through red (R) filtres. The supernova is located 0.7 arcsecond to the west and 0.8 arcsec north of the parent galaxy at a redshift of 0.478. The sky position is RA = 10h 50m 47.0s;Decl. = -9d 15m 07s (2000.0).
