Portugal and ESO sign co-operation agreement

On 10 July 1990, the Republic of Portugal and ESO signed a co-operation agreement, aimed at full Portuguese membership of ESO within 10 years. From left to right: Professor Teresa Lago (Astrophysical Centre, Porto), Professor Harry van der Laan (ESO DG), Professor José Pedro Sucena Paiva (Portuguese Secretary of State for Science and Technology), Professor Carlos Salema (President of JNICT), and Mr. Fernando Gonçalves (Chief of Cabinet of the Secretary of State).

Portugal signed the accession agreement to join ESO on 27 June 2000 (see eso0022).
