The Chajnantor plain

This panoramic view of the Chajnantor plain, high in the Chilean Andes, gives an impression of just how barren the landscape is. Yet, nestled in the centre you can just make out one of the antennae of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The snow capped peak to the left is the majestic Licancabur volcano.
