Recent Views from the Paranal Observatory

8 de Diciembre de 1999

A series of photographs from the Paranal Observatory was obtained with large-format cameras in mid-November 1999 by the ESO EPR Team.

They show the site of ESO's Very Large Telescope Array (VLT) at a time when most of the outside work at the top of the mountain has been terminated. Two of the four 8.2-m telescopes (ANTU and KUEYEN) are already in operation; the third, MELIPAL will have "First Light" in February 2000, to be followed later in the year by the fourth, YEPUN .

The selection of eight photos presented here includes general views of the observatory platform and two of the newly installed astronomical instruments, as well as the Interferometric Tunnel in which the light from the telescopes will be directed towards the Interferometric Laboratory. Two photos from the Base Camp are also shown: one from the Mirror Maintenance Building and another from the construction site of the Paranal Residencia.
