November 2013

Dear Fellow Communicators,

During the month of October we had the immense pleasure of judging some of the entries for the first ESO astronomy camp. It was a refreshing activity, bringing us closer to the way children today think and act. It was more obvious than ever that the connectivity tools they have at their disposal make them better informed, more creative and determined to succeed and even to change the world.

We were so impressed that we decided to extend our contribution from one bursary to three bursaries that will cover transport and participation costs. You can check the winners by clicking on the announcement below, where you can also read their entries. We  also invite you to meet Lucas, a 17-year old student who is determined to “burn the hearts of Brazilians with light from Cosmos”, and is one of the winners of the competition.

This month we welcome the Bayfordbury Observatory in the UK as our most recent Outreach Partner Organisation! We are also very happy to announce that we now have Australian and Hungarian mini-sites thanks to our new ESON representatives in these countries:

Tanya Hill and Mita Brierley for Australia and Ákos Kereszturi and Ferenc Horvai for Hungary.

A large contingent from the Chilean media participated in the visit of Sebastián Piñera, President of Chile, to Paranal, when he handed over the documents for the Armazones land. It was an exciting day with lots of media challenges for our Chilean team! A small step for the E-ELT, and towards another leap for astronomy!

Finally, we celebrated as our local Twitter account in Chile reached 1000 followers, the first of the translated ESO Twitter accounts!

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
