June 2014

Dear Fellow Communicators,

The E-ELT Groundbreaking event is fast approaching! We invite you to join us on 19 June for the blasting away of the top of Cerro Armazones, the (soon to be lower) 3060-metre peak that will be the home of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). To enable your visitors to witness this milestone first-hand, we invite you to organise a screening of the live video stream of the event that we will broadcast on Livestream and via YouTube, from 17:00 UTC until around 19:00 UTC. For further information, please read here.

We encourage you to keep us informed about any event you are planning by sending an e-mail to us so that we can help promote it through ESO’s communication channels.

This month we are also launching the second edition of the ESO Astronomy Camp that will take place from 26 December 2014 to 1 January 2015. This year’s camp focuses on distances in the Universe and several bursaries are being offered by ESO and partners in the ESON countries.

Finally, we would like to remind you about the AstroCamera 2014 competition, where we are offering several awards and the Photo Nightscapes Awards 2014, where we are offering a trip to Paranal, Chile as the first prize in the Pro category.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
