October 2011

Dear Friends,

October was a busy month at ESO! We had a great time during our Open House Day event and we hope you did too. If you weren’t in the area, check out the timelapse video of the E-ELT mirror mock-up here and see more details about the event here.

The Communicating Astronomy with the Public Conference in Beijing, China also gave us the chance to meet up with many of you and exchange ideas on how we can adapt our outreach efforts to the new media landscape. To quote IAU Commision 55 President Dennis Crabtree, “the main topics of the conference were: audience, readability, Global Astronomy Month, Venus Transit 2012 and Outrageous Outreach”. Watch this space for the presentations that will be uploaded next month.

The 5th of October also marked the 49th anniversary of ESO. Preparations are ongoing for next year, when we will be celebrating 50 years of reaching new heights in astronomy! Stay close for partnership opportunities during our anniversary year.

Don’t forget that ePOD occasionally distributes outreach products via postal mail. If you would like to be on our distribution list please consider providing a complete postal address and other information via this form.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head ESO education and Public Outreach Department
