Richard HookSurvey Telescopes, La Silla-Paranal & E-ELT Public Information Officer / Image Processing Richard was originally from England and has an MA in Physics from Oxford. After some time spent at the Royal Greenwich Observatory and in Australia and London, he has spent the last twenty years in the Space Telescope European Coordinating facility at ESO and has mostly worked on Hubble image processing. He was one of the developers of the "drizzling" technique for Hubble images and helped with the preparation of the Hubble Deep Fields and GOODS data. Douglas Pierce-PriceALMA-APEX Public Information Officer/Education Officer/ Deputy Head of the Department Douglas completed his Ph.D. at the Astrophysics Group of the University of Cambridge in 2001, working on A Submillimetre Continuum Survey of the Galactic Centre. During his Ph.D. he developed his interest in astronomical outreach. He worked from 2001 to 2005 as Science Outreach Specialist at the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hawaii, for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope, on a wide range of science education and public outreach activities, before joining ESO in 2005. Advanced Projects
Mathias AndreWeb & Advanced Projects Coordinator Mathias obtained a MSc in Computer Science in England and worked for several years as a Unix system administrator and IT Operations Manager before joining the ESO outreach group to tackle new challenges as Web and Advanced Projects Coordinator. Raquel Yumi ShidaWeb Content Coordinator Raquel obtained a professional degree in architecture and urban planning at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, her home country. As an undergraduate student she also took classes in various fields of science and became an avid amateur astronomer, publishing data and articles on galactic and extragalactic stars. Since then she has worked at the Astronomy Department at the University of São Paulo, at NASA/STScI and at ESA/Hubble, doing both scientific research and astronomy outreach. Today she is responsible for creating visual and textual content and managing several websites for ESO, IAU and ESA/Hubble. Luis CalçadaAnimations Assistant He studied Physics/Applied Math (Astronomy) but eventually gave up on the idea of becoming a real scientist. Got his first real job on a science centre in Portugal, where for 6 years he's discovered, developed and matured his skills in visual science comunication. At ESO he's part of the latter steps of the chain, in a group which tries to deliver to the public the extraordinary science there developed in the exciting and inspiring manner it deserves. His tools of choice are Maxon's Cinema 4D, Adobe's Photoshop and After Effects and a Wacom Intuos 3. Francisco RodriguezChile Press Officer Francisco is the Press Officer of ESO in Chile. After graduating from Diego Portales University in 2006, he worked for six years in print media, first for the Chilean magazine Qué Pasa and later for the newspaper La Tercera, one of the most important newspapers in the country. There, he wrote about science, technology, education and health. He also had the opportunity to attend various international conferences for science journalists in South America and the United States where he specialized in issues such as epidemics, new technologies and environmental problems. Mathieu IsidroScience Communication Assistant Mathieu is a French Australian dual national who holds a BA in English philology and a MA in translation and communication from ISIT, in Paris. His life-long passion for astronomy led him to write his MA thesis on a report to the US Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee entitled "A strategy for the detection and characterization of exoplanets". At the same time, he executed his final internship at CNES, the French space agency, where he was in charge of compiling, editing and translating the agency's biennial report. He then worked at Interpol as an English communication officer before seizing the opportunity to work at ESO. Keeping in mind his goal to combine his two passions - space and communication -, Mathieu now occupies his free time by writing articles for CNES' website and working as a freelance translator, specializing in science and space. Interns
Gara Mora CarrilloIntern Science Communication Gara graduated in astrophysics at the University of La Laguna, in Spain. She did some research in astrophysics both at the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) and NASA/STScI, before she focused on science outreach by obtaining a master degree in science communication. Since then she has worked in several research organisations, managed a bookshop specialised in science outreach and qualified as a secondary physics teacher in the UK. In returning to work in astronomy outreach, she expects to gain some experience in the role of the information officer in the production of video material for public outreach, as well as strengthen her writing skills. André RebeloIntern Graphic Design I'm André Rebelo, 23 years old and I'm from Portugal. I've started my studies in science, but my passion for visual arts prevailed and in 2012 I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. Over the last year I was an Eramus student in the Faculty of Design and Art of the University of Bolzano, Italy.
