How to take pictures of Aurora

The data given here are for Northern Norway:

Camera:

Possibility for long exposures.
Lens with f-stop = 2.8 or more powerful (2.0, 1.8, 1.4).
Film: 800 ASA or faster.
Tripod.
Cable release or long exposure times on camera.
The two observers have to communicate on telephone during or right before the operation. Take a series of pictures with different exposure times.

Suggestion:

5s, 10s, 20s, 40s
or
4s, 8s, 16s, 32s
