From a Provisional Report to Brussels

Here are some excerpts from a short report about Astronomy On-Line, compiled by the organisers for provisional information to the European Commission in Brussels, immediately after the end of the Hot Week:

...From October 1 until the deadline on November 15, 720 groups with about 5000 participants from 39 countries registered with Astronomy On-Line. The Astronomy On-line Web site at ESO which was prepared by ESO for this project, received up to 100 000 hits per day for Astronomy On-line entries. This number does not include the very numerous hits at the 25 mirror sites elsewhere in Europe.....

...A number of countries were particularly active both what concerns the number of participants and the quality and quantity of contributions made, for example Denmark, France, Greece, Norway and Bulgaria. In these areas, Astronomy On-line has almost been considered as a national event....

...Various activities some of which were quite easy and therefore attractive also for young pupils aged 12-14, were met with a very considerable response as for example:

The Lunar Eclipse on September 27 and the Solar Eclipse on October 12 have permitted a very large number of students, thanks to the information distributed via the Web, to calculate themselves on the base of their own measurements the size of the Moon and the distance from the Earth to the Moon.....

....The historical experiment of Erathostenes, who was the first to make a correct measurement of the diameter of the Earth, has been repeated by hundreds of students across Europe. A combination of their results has permitted them to find themselves the correct value of the size of the Earth.....

....All of these activities have helped the pupils and the students to familiarize themselves with the new information technologies, but also with scientific methods and techniques employed by astronomers and professional researchers. Many observations were made at about 10 professional observatories for the participants of this project.....

....There has been a very large number of reports in the media about the event, in newspapers, radio and TV, and it will take some time to collect all of this.....

....Encouraged by the outstanding success of this pilot project, the organizers of Astronomy On-line are of the opinion that a follow-up of this project is highly recommended.....
