Programme no. 19
Title NGC 7331 Group of Galaxies.
Proposing Group(s) Soenderborg School Observatory

Abstract: Most textbooks on Astronomy have a severe lack of Hubble Law examples. Examples - if any - mostly date back to the 1950s - often in bad image quality. It would be most feasible, in case we could get access to: a number of combined Galaxy CCD photos + Doppler Shift Spectra - e.g. H+K Lines. Galaxy Distance could be estimated by means of angular diameter - applying ordinary trigonometry. The Galaxy examples below - or similar examples from other declinations - - may help us to write modern WWW AOL educational material - demonstrating qualitatively the aspects of Hubbles law.

Comments by OPC

General Comments: The results would indeed be illustrative. Subjected to the availability of a suitable spectrograph.

Visibility:The field is observable at the beginning of the night.

Special Comments: Calibration lamp exposures to determine the absolute redshift would be desirable too.

Expected time consumption (including overhead): Depending on the telescope to be used; about 1 hour per source for a 1-m class telescope.

Proposed facility: Depending on the spectrograph availability.
