Programme no. 23
Title Supernova in NGC 673
Proposing Group(s) Decour-1no

Abstract: Supernova to be observed

Full Text of Proposal

Comments by OPC

General Comments: The type Ia supernova 1996bo in NGC 673 is now less than one month past maximum. It is not clear from the proposal what the rationale for the requested observations is, but the authors could try to determine the apparent magnitude if a standard star is provided.

Visibility:The target is visible in the first half of the night.

Special Comments: H-alpha observations should be done using a redshifted filter, due to the fact that the H-alpha line is expected to be displaced by some 87 Angstrom from its rest wavelength as a consequence of the recession velocity of the host galaxy. Their calibration would pose rather great difficulties. H-alpha observations are the most time consuming, and it is doubtful that they could add much to the results.

Expected time consumption (including overhead): About 2 hours.

Proposed facility:The faint magnitude of the object requires a rather large telescope. If H-alpha observations must be really carried out, the Dutch 90 cm telescope at La Silla has the most appropriate filter (number 389).
