Programme no. 30
Title Determination of the distance and the age of a open star cluster using photometric measurements in different colours
Proposing Group(s) Observatory Crimmitschau

Abstract: We want to make a Colour-Magnitude-Diagramm (CMD) of the clusters with the help of CCD-images in visual and blue light. By comparision of the CMD with a standard-HRD we want to determine the distance and the age.

Comments by OPC

General Comments: An easy-to-do exercise which allows a useful introduction to the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and stellar evolution.

Visibility:M 67 is better observed at the end of the night.

Special Comments: The large pixel size of the Crni Vrh 20 cm. telescope (over 10") makes it inappropriate for this project. The extent of the clusters can be covered in a sigle frame for each with the Brorfelde Schmidt telescope, with a much better pixel sampling.

Expected time consumption (including overhead):About 5 min. for each cluster.

Proposed facility:Brorfelde Schmidt telescope.
