Information about Observing Programme

Programme no. 39
Title Jupiter atmosphere
Proposing Group(s) Association Aphelie

Abstract: Jupiter is visible at the very beginning of the night, and the CCD imaging coupled to data processing alows to see and study the complex atmosphere of Jupiter. We propose to image Jupiter in a lot of spectral bands, in order to get the maximum of information. We can calculate the ratios Flux I/Flux R, etc..

Comments by OPC

General Comments: Comparing images of Jupiter in different bands is indeed an interesting exercise, whose results can be interpreted in terms of our present knowledge of the overall structure of the atmosphere of Jupiter.

Visibility:As the authors point out, Jupiter is visible only at the beginning of the night.

Special Comments: Some special filters are especially appropriate for observations of the cloud structure of Jupiter (e.g. the methane bands). If some observatory can provide them, it should be given preference.

Expected time consumption (including overhead): About 10 minutes.

Proposed facility:OHP, Wendelstein, or the Dutch telescope at La Silla.
