1st ESO-EAAE Astronomy Summer School

General travel information

Please note: for instructions of how to get to ESO and Garching on your arrival, and for travel between Garching and Munich, please see the general travel information page on the ESO website.

Location information

The Summer School takes place at ESO in Garching. A map of the Garching campus site is available. The Auditorium and Council Room are in the ESO Headquarters building. Room L130 is in the building marked L7A in blue on the map. Directions to L130 will be provided at the Summer School, and are available online.

Travel between the hotels and ESO

On foot

From the hotels Am Park and König Ludwig II in the centre of Garching, you may choose to walk to ESO. Please see the map of the Garching area for details.

By U-Bahn (line U6)

Alternatively, you can travel on the U-Bahn line U6, which is quicker. We also recommend that delegates at the Hotel Ibis use the U-Bahn. Please note that the information here is intended as a guide only, and that you should refer to the MVV Munich Public Transport website for authoritative information and for further information about travel within Munich.

Hotel Am Park and Hotel König Ludwig II:

The "Garching" U-Bahn station is very close to both the Am Park and König Ludwig II hotels. Take the U6 one stop north (go to the platform marked "Richtung Garching-Forschungszentrum", not "Richtung München"), to the "Garching Forschungszentrum" station. When you arrive, follow the signs to the exit marked "ESO", and walk along Boltzmannstrasse for 5-10 minutes. See the map of the Garching area for details. For return journeys from Garching Forschungszentrum to Garching, it does not matter which platform you use as you are at the end of the line.

Hotel Ibis

Delegates at the Hotel Ibis should take the U-Bahn line U6 from the "Garching-Hochbrück" station, two stops north to the "Garching Forschungszentrum" station. As described above, use the platform marked "Richtung Garching-Forschungszentrum", and not "Richtung München".

You have a choice of tickets for this journey. Tickets can be bought from automated machines at the U-Bahn stations, and must be stamped (invalidated) before starting your trip, by inserting them into the blue ticket-cancelling machines. The same fare is sufficient for single journeys between either Garching or Garching-Hochbrück and Garching Forschungszentrum (ESO).

Single ticket

A single ticket ("Einzelfahrkarte") for a short trip ("Kurzstrecke") is sufficient. Cost: €1.10

Stripe ticket

A stripe ticket ("Streifenkarte") has 10 stripes. A short trip ("Kurzstrecke") is sufficient, for which you must fold the ticket and stamp a single stripe in the blue ticket-cancelling machines. Cost: €10.50 for a ticket with 10 stripes.

Day ticket

A single day ticket ("Single Tageskarte") for the "München XXL" zone allows you unlimited travel between ESO and Garching, and in central Munich, from when it is stamped until 6am the following day. Cost: €6.70

Partner day ticket

A partner day ticket ("Partner Tageskarte") for the "München XXL" zone allows up to five adults unlimited travel together between ESO and Garching, and in central Munich, from when it is stamped until 6am the following day. Cost: €11.80

U-Bahn line U6 train frequency

From Garching Forschungszentrum towards Garching and Munich in the evenings:

Trains run approximately every 10 minutes between 15:52 and 18:52 on Thursday and Monday, and between 13:12 and 18:30 on Friday, and every 20 minutes at other times.

From Garching-Hochbrück (and Garching 3 minutes later) to Garching Forschungszentrum in the mornings:

Trains run approximately every 10 minutes between 07:10 and 09:20 on Thursday, Friday and Monday, and every 20 minutes at other times.

Last trains from the city centre to Garching:

The last trains to Garching from the city centre station Marienplatz depart at 00:38 on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday evening. On Friday and Saturday evening there is an additional train which leaves Marienplatz at 01:24.
