ESO PR Video Clips 01a-c/97

22 December 1997

For immediate release

As a new service to visitors to this Website, we will from time to time make short video clips available for illustration of the ongoing work at the European Southern Observatory. Information about other ESO videos will be found in the corresponding webarea.

VLT Mirror Transport

We publish here as first examples three clips from the transport of the first VLT 8.2-m Zerodur mirror (M1) from the port of Antofagasta to the Paranal Observatory, as obtained by the ESO EPR Video Team.

Please refer also to the twelve high-quality photographic images of this event, cf. ESO Press Photos 35a-l/97. In addition, the first (digital) photo from the inspection of the mirror after arrival is now available ( ESO Press Photo 36/97 [JPEG; 376k] ). It shows the mirror in its box on December 18, 1997, now within the Mirror Maintenance Building (MMB), and moments after the cover had been removed. During the ensuing careful inspection of the complete mirror surface, no damage was detected.
