The ESO Public Affairs Department produces various brochures and other publications on different subjects for the public.

For the documents below, Portable Document Format (PDF) is used. To display PDF files you can either use Adobe Acrobat Reader, XPDF or Alladin Ghostscript - all these viewers are free.

  • ESO Calendar 2008

    ESO Calendar 2008

    ESO has produced a superb calendar for the year 2008, with beautiful astronomical images, unique pictures of ESO's telescopes and breath taking landscapes. Lunar phases are also indicated.

    The calendar measures 49 x 49 cm and has 14 pages, with a cardboard back. It is delivered in a cardboard box. The price is EUR 25.-, pp. included.

  • ESO Annual Report

    ESO Annual Report 2006 (114 pages)

    The ESO Annual Report is presented by the Director General to the ESO Council and includes a complete report about the achievements during the past calendar year. It is normally published immediately after the June (July) Council meeting the following year.

  • ESO Brochure (March 2007)

    ESO Brochure (48 pages - 2007)

    A new version of the ESO brochure "A Universe of Discoveries" has become available. It contains information about the Organisation and its research facilities, as well as the resulting science. It is amply illustrated with the newest photos, especially from the VLT. Also, information is available about the future observing facilties ALMA and the E-ELT. Please note that, in order to keep the pdf file at a reasonable size, the many photos in those files are reproduced at a significantly lower resolution (72 dpi) than in the printed versions.

  • ESO Messenger

    ESO Messenger (Four issues per year)

    The ESO Messenger is published four times a year, normally in March, June, September and December. Its brings the latest news about the on-going work at ESO, including reports about scientific results based on data from the ESO telescopes.

  • ESO Early History (1991)

    "ESO's Early History" by Adriaan Blaauw (268 pages - 1991)

    This book, written by Professor Adriaan Blaauw (ESO Director General 1970 - 1974), tells the early story of ESO. It begins in the early 1950's when leading European astronomers initiated the project and started a search for the best possible site under the comparatively unexplored southern sky. It describes the development of ESO up to about 1975.
