CCD dust

Tiny particles of dust that settle on sensitive parts of a telescope, such as the CCD window or the filter, will create large, out-of-focus reflections of the telescope's main mirror on the CCD. This gives rise to the dark ring shapes seen near the centre of this image.

This image will be available in the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre in Garching, Munich.
