ESO Council on Paranal (part 1)

In 1991 ESO Council visited the mountaintop at Paranal where the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the world's most advanced optical/infrared telescope, was to be built. The site, at an altitude of 2600 metres, is in the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth, and is particularly suitable for astronomical observations.
