Video News Release 6: VLT observes comet Wirtanen

ESO Video News Reel 6 ("VLT Observes Comet Wirtanen") is published on June 29, 1999, on the occasion of an European Space Agency (ESA) Press Conference about the ESA Rosetta space mission that will approach and land on the nucleus of this comet when it is near its aphelion, some years from now. More details are given in the caption to ESO Press Photos eso9932. The video begins with a recent ESO image of famous Comet Hale-Bopp, now also at large heliocentric distance. Then follows some scenes from the second 8.2-m VLT Unit Telescope (KUEYEN) with with the observation of Comet Wirtanen was made in May 1999. There are several versions of a sequence that shows the motion of the comet. A statement is made by an ESO VLT staff astronomer (also a comet specialist) about the implications of these observations for the planning of the Rosetta mission. The combined image of several individual exposures is shown and the video ends with another statement by the ESO astronomer and a message about future observations of this and other spacecraft targets.

This Video News Release is targeted especially at broadcasters for further editing. In order to keep the audio tracks editable, different sound information has been recorded on two separate tracks at optimal volumes as is common standard in professional post production. This video is not meant for on screen viewing — on ESOcasts are better suited for that.
