The VLT Interferometer (VLTI) provides the possibility to operate the ESO VLT in the interferometric mode, where the light beams of the 8 meters Unit Telescopes (UTs) and the 1.8 meter Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) are combined coherently for very high angular resolution imaging.
The objective of the AT Software Project is the design and the development of the AT Control Software (ATCS), which is essential to control and operate effectively all the telescope equipment.
The
Glossary, explains precisely the meaning of some technical words and phrases, which the reader might refer to.The present document defines and describes the operational and functional requirements of the ATCS.
This document settles the basis of the software life cycle for the ATCS, taking as a basis the Unified Software Development Process [
RD04] and considering the recommendations contained in IEEE Std 1012-1986 [RD01] [RD02] and in IEEE-1985[RD03]. It follows logically and in time the Concept Phase, whose results, collected in the form of miscellaneous materials (memos, reviews, presentations, reports), supply the inputs to this Software Requirements Specification (SRS). The VLT Software Concept Specification [AD03] and the VLT Software Requirements Specification [AD04] provide an essential background to the reader. The intended audience is potential users of the ATCS, system engineers, designers of the Interferometer Supervisor Software Package.
Readers interested also in design level documentation should read directly the ATCS System Design Description document [AD24]. This last document contains also all information that is part of the ATCS Requirements Specification. The common information is automatically inserted from the ATCS Online Documentation into both printable documents, without actual information duplication.
This document adheres to the standard documentation plan for the VLT Software [
AD01] and constitutes a general reference, which is applicable to all the ATCS Software documentation. It represents the major input to the functional specification documents (see Chapter System Attributes - Documentation). The document is released for the VLT archive at specified project milestones, with a release number and a release date, to document the history of the project and for reference.
The most up to date information for the project is available in the ATCS Online Documentation in hypertext format and can be accessed through any World Wide Web browser at the following URL:
http://www.eso.org/~gchiozzi/ATS/atcsdoc
UID: atcsdoc PWD: newgenuml
The hypertext documentation is kept under configuration control in the VLT module named atcsdoc. In this document, references to html pages contained in the atcsdoc module are given in the form of a URL relative to root directory of the module. It also corresponds to the entry page in the Web repository.
This document describes the functions that the ATCS shall provide to control all the heterogeneous devices belonging to the Auxiliary Telescopes.
The ATCS shall interface through proper hardware and software communication channels the following external systems:
The ATCS shall provide services to the following external clients:
