UVES pipeline:
Naming scheme

List of codes for calibration products
(master files and other products)

Names of calibration products follow a certain naming convention. This is done to have human-readable names rather than archive or original file names. The naming scheme has been chosen to have the type of product, its date of creation, and its pipeline-relevant parameter values all recognizable from its name.

Presently, there are calibration products only for the echelle mode.

Instrument code

Since period 67 (2001-04-01), all UVES calibration product names start with UV_ in order to be able to distinguish between, e.g., MBIA frames from FORS1 and UVES in case of archive downloads. The other VLT instruments follow the same scheme, i.e. their calibration products also start with a 2letter instrument code.

All earlier files delivered carry the old names without instrument code.

In Period 68 (since 2001-10-01), the master flats (UV_MFLT) and line tables (UV_PLI1...3) have the slit width included in their name. This is to have an exact matching of these calibration products with the corresponding science files.

In Period 68 (since 2001-10-01), master flats are also created from deuterium lamp flats (346 settings) and I2 absorption cell flats (RED_600_1x1 setting).

Type of product

The type of product is coded with four letters:

1st letter M or P master file or product file
2nd to 4th letter ... type of product

The following types of calibration products presently exist:

Code Type of file
MBIA master bias
MFLT master flat (ordinary FF lamp)
MDFT master deuterium flat (deuterium lamp, 346 settings only)
MIFT master I2 flat (FF3 lamp plus I2 absorption cell, RED_600_1x1 only)
MRSP master response curve (created from several individual response curves)
PDRS setup table for data reduction system
PORD order table
PBKG background table
PGUE line guess table
PLI1...3 line tables (1 and 3: sky window, 2: object window)

Date of origin, version

The date of origin is identical to the date of the raw data measurement. It is coded as, e.g., 011015 for Oct 15, 2001. The version of a file is indicated by capital letters always starting with A. Versioning is supported for certain types of files only, namely:

For PDRS, PLI1...3, MFLT , this applies only if the raw files have been obtained during the night (attached calibrations) for high-precision needs.

In all other cases, only one version per day is created.

Instrumental parameters

Those parameters which are relevant for the specific type of calibration product are included in its name. Most products have the following scheme:

<CCD><WLEN><MODE>_<BIN>

where

With Period 68 (since 2001-10-01), master flats (MFLT), and line tables (PLI1...3), have the slit width added behind the above string, i.e. have

<CCD><WLEN><MODE>_<BIN>_<SLTW>

where SLTW is the slit width in arcsec * 10 (e.g. 0.5 arcs are coded as 05, and 2.1 arcs as 21).

Master Biases have only <CCD>_<BIN> as mode designator.

Extension

The master files have extension .fits, while most product files are tables and have extension .tfits .

Examples

UV_PORD_010421A_REDU580d1_2x2.tfits is the order table from 2001-04-21 for UVES setting REDU580d1_2x2 (since the corresponding raw file has data from both red CCDs, there will always be a corresponding REDL product).

UV_PLI2_011021C_BLUE346bl_1x1_07.tfits is the so-called object line table from 2001-10-21 for setting BLUE346bl_1x1, slit width 0.7 arcs. It is the third one from this night (from at least three).

UV_MBIA_010410A_BLUE_1x1.fits is the (first and only) master bias for setting BLUE_1x1 from 2001-04-10. It is valid for all files from the blue CCD and with binning 1x1.
