UVES-MOS pipeline:
Naming scheme

List of codes for calibration products
(master files and other products)

Names of calibration products follow a certain naming convention. This is done to have human-readable names rather than archive or original file names. The naming scheme has been chosen to have the type of product, its date of creation, and its pipeline-relevant parameter values all recognizable from its name.

Instrument code

All UVES calibration product names start with UV_ in order to be able to distinguish between, e.g., MBIA frames from FORS1 and UVES in case of archive downloads. The other VLT instruments follow the same scheme, i.e. their calibration products also start with a 2 letter instrument code.

Type of product

The type of product is coded with four letters:

1st letter M or P master file or product file
2nd to 4th letter ... type of product

The following types of calibration products presently exist:

Code Type of file
MBIA master bias
MSFT master slit flat
MSxx other master slit flat products (see below for possible values)
MFxx master fibre flat products (see below for possible values)
PDRS setup table for data reduction system
PODF order definition frame
POGU guess order definiton table
PORD order definition table
PGUE guess line table
PLIN line table

Date of origin, version

The date of origin is identical to the date of the raw data measurement. It is coded as, e.g., 031015 for Oct 15, 2003. The version of a file is indicated by capital letters always starting with A. Versioning is supported for certain types of files only, namely:

In all other cases, only one version per day is created.

Instrumental parameters

Those parameters which are relevant for the specific type of calibration product are included in its name. The following scheme is used:

<CCD><WLEN><MODE>_SI<SIMCAL>_PL<PLATE>

where

SIMCAL is set according to the value of the INS.SLIT3.MODE keyword (from the fits headers): 6FIB or 8FIB means SIMCAL=0, 7+1FIB means SIMCAL=1.

The full scheme applies to MFxx, MSxx, PLIN, and PORD files. PDRS, PGUE, PODF, and POGU have only <CCD><WLEN><MODE>_PL<PLATE>. For master bias files, <CCD>_<BIN> is used as mode designator, with BIN being the detector binning (always 1x1 in case of UVES-MOS). The primary master slit flats (MSFT) have <CCD><WLEN><MODE>.

Master products from slit and fibre flats

There is a large number of pipeline products that are derived from slit and fibre flat fields. From Period 74 on (i.e. from 1 October 2004), these products are coded with MSxx or MFxx, respectively, where xx can be BN, BP, CO, DT, NO, NS, or SG. Note that some of the products (BN, BP, DT, SG) come as data cubes combining up to three individual files. The original files can be recovered using the DECUBI/FLAM command of the MIDAS FLAMES context.

For master files produced in Period 73 or earlier, the type was either MSFT of MFFT and an additional three letter code was added after the instrumental parameters. Data cubes were not used.

Extension

The master files have extension .fits, while most product files are tables and have extension .tfits .

Examples

UV_MSFT_030226C_REDL580re.fits is the third master slit flat field from 2003-02-26 for central wavelength 580nm and the (red) lower chip. Usually, slit flat fields are recorded in three different positions so that three master slit flats exist.

UV_MSDT_041001A_REDU580fi_SI0_PL1.fits is one of the several different master slit flat products. It should be used for science data from plate 1 which are not using the SimCal feature.

UV_MFFT_030226A_REDL580fi_SI1_PL2_NSG.fits is an example for the old (P73 and earlier) naming scheme for master fibre flat fields. It can be taken for science frames using simultaneous calibration and plate 2. 'NSG' distinguishs this product from other products of the same reduction step.

UV_PLIN_030226C_REDU860fi_SI0_PL2.tfits is the line table from 2003-02-26 for the red upper chip, 860nm, plate 2, and SIMCAL=0. It is the third one from this night (from at least three).

UV_MBIA_030227A_REDU_1x1.fits is the (first and only) master bias for REDU_1x1 from 2003-02-27. It is valid for all files from the red upper CCD and with binning 1x1.
