The Director General (DG) is responsible to the ESO Council for all safety matters at ESO and is directly assisted in these tasks by the ESO Safety Engineer.
The ESO Safety Engineer is responsible for the systematic development of a comprehensive safety and health concept at ESO. To fulfill his duties he has the right to investigate in all aspects of occupational health, safety and environmental protection in all of ESO´s activities and a right of access to all relevant documents. Furthermore, the ESO Safety Engineer can act in emergencies and cases of imminent danger to suspend the work immediately. In special cases the ESO Safety Engineer can permit exceptions to applicable safety regulations.
Each ESO Site has one person nominated as "Site Safety Engineer ".
ESO Site Safety Engineers are responsible for facilitating and co-ordinating ESO's safety and health programme at the respective sites. All Site Safety Engineers report to the head of the respective site and provide reports to the ESO Safety Engineer. A safety report is periodically provided to the Director General via the ESO Safety Engineer.

are available. They are not secret but also not intended for distribution outside
ESO.
