STOP analysis (Structural, Thermal and Optical Performance analysis) of astronomical instruments: modelling and testing

The performance of complex optical instruments and telescopes that are being developed in these years must be known for a range of environmental or load conditions that are experienced during the development, verification and operational phases. In the framework of a collaboration ESO/ESA, a specific software modelling tool is being developed, in order to provide a full structural, thermal and optical performance analysis (STOP).  


Objective of the master thesis would be:

  • Participation to the development of a realistic model, in which the most critical perturbations (gravity, temperature, pressure…) affecting an astronomical setup could be enhanced and simulated.
  • Development and implementation of a compact setup suitable to be analyzed and compared with STOP predictions in an optimal way.
