Detector characterisation for the Phasing- and Diagnostic Station of the ELT

The Phasing and Diagnostic Station (PDS) will be a facility to co-phase the approx. 900 mirror segments of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT).

The PDS consists of several sensor arms, which are equipped with two visible and two infrared detectors. This includes large format CCD detectors as well as ultra-low noise and extremely fast CMOS detectors.

The goal of the project is to characterize the detectors, to optimize the detector operation for the respective sensors and to investigate the most suitable readout modes.

The project provides the opportunity to work with the latest detector technology with a direct application in astronomical instrumentation.

Student profile: Solid background in physics and an interest in data analysis would be an asset.
