Galaxies at high redshift: a submm continuum perspective

I will review the progress in our understanding of distant star-forming galaxies obtained via 
submm continuum surveys of the distant Universe, spanning the single-dish surveys of the late 
1990s to the powerful follow-up with ALMA.
