Title: A new method of estimating the flattening of the Galactic potential from stellar streams Abstract: I present a new method of constraining the Galactic potential from the motion of cold stellar streams. Since the orbital energies of stars from a given tidal stream are nearly identical, the mean kinetic energy of stream stars is expected to vary along the position in the stream, reflecting the variation of the gravitational potential of the Milky Way along the stream. Based on this idea, I tried to recover the potential of a model Milky Way by using the positions and velocities of modeled stream particles. I find that stellar streams near their turning points (apocenter or pericenter) provide a good constraint on the flattening of the potential of the Milky Way.
