New insights on the gas distribution of the broad line region and the determination of black hole masses. In this talk, I discuss our latest efforts to improve current SMBH mass estimations in high redshift quasars by thoroughly studying the emission from material in the close vicinity of the SMBH, namely, the accretion disk and the broad line region (BLR). I will also discuss how these studies have allowed us to put further constraints on the physical properties and distribution of the BLR material.
