Welcome Reception

A welcome reception will be held at ESO on Tuesday evening, November 18, after the last session.

Workshop Dinner A workshop dinner will be organized on Wednesday evening, November 19, in a typical Bavarian Restaurant in downtown München (Schwabing). There will be a bus transfer, but courageous participants can explore the night life after the Dinner and return to Garching by public transportation. There will be a set menu Bavarian Style with a vegetarian option. Details and price will be announced in due time.

Internet and e-mail Internet and email connection (only via a WEBMAIL service at the home institution) will be available in the poster room. The username and password to be used will be indicated in the "Note to Participants" document in the folder which the participants will receive at registration.

Workshop Proceedings The Workshop Proceedings will be edited by Hans Ulrich Käufl and Alan Moorwood. They will be published in the Springer-Verlag series "ESO Astrophysics Symposia". The deadline for submission of manuscripts is February 29, 2004. Here are the Instructions for Authors. There will be some editorial overview exercised. The editor is committed to produce a concise subject index.

Geographical Location Munich is located in southern Germany. The ESO Headquarters are situated on the institute campus just north of the town of Garching, which is itself about 20 km north of Munich (overview map; map of Garching). Munich offers excellent public transport. Garching can be reached by bus in combination with U-Bahn (underground) or S-Bahn (commuter train).

How to get to ESO The international airport of Munich (München) is located some 20 km north of Garching. From the airport, you can choose between the S-Bahn+Bus or taxi to go to your hotel. A taxi (recommended) to a hotel in Garching will cost you approx 30€.

If you arrive by train at the Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), you can reach Garching by taking the S-Bahn to Marienplatz, then U-Bahn U6 to Garching-Hochbrück (see map below for connections), then bus 291 to Garching. Ismaning has a direct S-Bahn connection (S 8) from the airport and the Hauptbahnhof.

Bus Transfer to the Workshop In the mornings and in the evenings of the workshop, there will be a bus transfer service between the hotels and ESO. See the bus schedule here. Participants who do not want to use the workshop transfer bus can still use public transportation and the timetables will be available at the workshop secretariat.

Public Transport Warning: Due to two major construction efforts in the area, the connection of Garching to the subway network of Munich and the erection of a new stadium for the 2006 Football World Cup, the subway traffic is severely disrupted and also the bus connections are affected. Schedules are changing on short notice. See the Overview Table for an indicative summary, with some caveats, of public transport possibilities between the airport, Garching, ESO, Ismaning and Munich city centre.

Please note that it is not advisable to bring a car to the workshop venue because of limited parking space. In fact, because of the above mentioned ongoing construction work parking space in the Garching campus is now really scarce!

More travel instructions can be found on the ESO Travel and Local Information pages. Moreover we recommend to consult the electronic time tables of the Munich tranportation network, MVV, and of the German Railways.

Lunch The closest canteen (5 minutes walk from ESO) is the canteen of the Max-Planck Institute (see map. Number 28 shows the canteen, and 37 the ESO Headquarters). The opening hours are: Dining hall: Mo. - Thu. 11:15 - 13:45; Fr. 11:15 - 13:30. Cafeteria: Mo. - Thu. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 16:30; Fr.: 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 14:00. Only cash is accepted. Prices for a main course range from about 4 to 6 Euros.

Security In order to reach the Max-Planck-Institute Canteen it is necessary to pass a security check at the gate on entering the Max-Planck-Institute area. The Workshop name badge together with an identity card / passport has to be shown to allow access.

Bank service There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code). Please note that the banks may close during lunch time and have otherwise opening hours grossly different from shops.

Travel agent The ESO travel agent Carlson Wagonlit, located at ESO Headquarters in room 203, can help you, if needed, to make arrangements for your travel after the workshop. The opening hours are Monday-Thursday 9:00-16:30 and Friday 9:00-16:00.

Weather Munich daytime temperatures in November are somewhat unpredictable. It can be foggy, wet, cold and even slushy, in other words real ugly. Frost is not uncommon. But there may be also "Föhn" and things look very different: excellent sunny and warm autumn weather, typically in the range 15-20 C. For more information, see the Yahoo Munich weather forecast or WeatherOnline. Live weather data for Munich as well as Garching are also available online.

Excursion to
Munich and Surroundings:
Munich is a fantastic town with a rich cultural life and remarkable collections in various galleries and museums. You should consider staying over the weekend, especially if this brings down the cost for your airline ticket. If you intend to stay longer then it is advisable to plan not to arrive before Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003 and similarly to depart latest on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 (see also the Accommodation Form). You can consult e.g. with the Lonely Planet Travel Guide, as a starting point.
