SUMMER SCHOOL IN ASTROPHYSICAL
CNRS-Observatoire de Haute-Provence and European Southern Observatory
Observatoire de Haute-Provence, 15-25 July 1998
The ESO/OHP Summer School offers young astronomers the opportunity to gain practical observing experience under realistic conditions. Participants will work in groups of three and will be guided by an experienced observer in the use of the instrumentation of the OHP. Each group will carry out a small observing programme on the telescopes of 0.8-1.9m aperture (direct imaging and spectroscopy with a CCD detector). They will reduce the data with a modern image processing system (MIDAS and IRAF). The results will be related to relevant additional information from the astronomical literature, and presented in a brief summary to the other participants at the end of the school.
The preparation of the practical work will be supplemented by a series of 90-minute lectures which will be given by invited specialists.
The working language at the school will be English. Applications are invited from graduate students working on a Ph.D. thesis in astronomy at an institute in one of the ESO member countries. Application forms are available from the organisers and are to be returned by March 31st, 1998. Additionally, a letter of recommendation by a senior scientist familiar with the applicant's work is required. Up to eighteen participants will be selected and will have their travel and living expenses fully covered by the school.
