I am married with three children. Asta, my wife, is a kindergarten teacher by training. Before her retirement, she was in charge of Garching's "Mini-Club" with toddlers from almost all over the world.

My eldest son, Jakob Just, is employed by the Danish Ministry for Research, Innovation and Higher Education as Head of the Danish Research Office (DANRO) in Brussels (a member of the IGLO group). Before that, he worked as an FP-7 expert at the Eurocentre of the Danish Research Agency in Copenhagen, having joined after a term at the Royal Danish Consulate General in Munich as an attaché.

Sarah Louise completed her bachelor's degree in anthropology at the University of Copenhagen in 2011, but has also been active (occasionally almost omnipresent, it seems) in the arts (from poetry over photography and paintings to theatre) not to forget social work with refugees mainly in the frame of the Danish Red Cross. In this context, she was heavily involved in the ASIG and the transnational EU-supported Positive Images projects. She is currently engaged in humanitarian work for Action Aid Palestine in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt).

Christoph Martin, our youngest, tries his skills in the Danish media world, within the fields of TV and film. Following an internship in ESO's Education and Public Relations Department (ePOD) he joined the Danish Media College in Viborg in August 2009 as a student. His goal is to become a TV producer. He is also keeping a sharp eye on soccer. His favourite position on the field is that of the goal-keeper.

In my various professional functions, I have been fortunate to be able to combine my main interests: Science and its societal aspects, communication and international affairs. Since my youth, I have travelled extensively across this planet, and with my job this has inevitably meant a life on the move. Though based in Munich, yet almost constantly travelling, my mental home is a small cottage on the Danish west coast (just opposite Newcastle). It's windy, rainy, in the middle of nowhere...and nice. And, fortunately, with many good friends around. In the good old days, when I still had some spare time, I enjoyed flying in gliders and small aircraft....and a game of chess. Other good things in life? Music by Elgar, Dvorak or Nielsen, perhaps Herbie Hancock on a lazy Sunday afternoon! Coldplay and Kashmir are not bad, either. And occasionally a glass of superb Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, Antiquas Riservas, if possible!

Our Danish refuge....
