Software
Engineer At ESO I work on the architecture, design and implementation of software for the control and operation of telescopes. All these projects are characterized by a high industrial quality standard, achieved through formal software configuration and control management techniques. All my work on software engineering, standards and methodologies has been done in strict collaboration with the VLT/ALMA software quality assurance and ESO IT groups.
As a senior software architect, I am also involved directly in ALMA and E-ELT (ESO's new 30m project). ALMA, 2007 to 1999 From 2000 until March 2007, I have been mainly
involved in the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) project, an
international collaboration between European, American and
Japanese institutes for the construction of a radio interferometer
in Chile.
I have been also a member of the ALMA High Level Analysis and Software Engineering groups, where I have played a key role on one side in the definition of the overall architecture of the ALMA project and on the other side in the definition of the software engineering standards and software development methodology. ACS is publicly available and is used also in other projects in the community of large physics experiments, in particular by astronomical telescopes. VLT Common Software, Telescope Contorl software and VLTI Auxiliary Telescopes, 1994-1999 In this period I have given a major contribution
to the development of the control system for the Very Large
Telescope (VLT), now in operation in the Atacama desert in Chile.

Software
Engineer My activity has been mainly focused in the study
of recognition techniques and interpretation of raster images to
perform raster to vector conversion. The aim of the project
was the development of software tools for automatic interpretation
of technological maps, able to recognise not only lines and text,
but high level, complex entities and to fill in a technical data
base with all the data found on the raster image. All these projects have been developed using
Object Oriented methodologies and following Software Engineering
practices. Continuous contacts with the customer of the system
have been necessary in the requirements gathering phase and during
the development, in some cases done leading as a technical
consultant a team of developers at the customer’s premises.
