Taxi driver Afternoon 16/3/2003. We have just landed at San Andres and our friendly taxi driver is taking us to the hotel and giving us an introduction to the island. In the background is the shipwreck near Haynes Cay. San Andres is a small coral island in the Caribbean 700 km north-west of the Colombian mainland and only 230 km east of Nicaragua. San Andres is only 13 km long and 3 km wide. It is relatively flat and largely covered with coconut palms. A 30 km scenic paved road circles the island, and several roads cross inland. The population of the island is about 57000.
